Renting a campervan in Spanien: what to know

Driving & tolls

Good news first: most Spanish motorways are now toll-free, after several AP-route concessions ended — driving here costs far less than in France. What needs planning instead are the low-emission zones (ZBE) that Spanish law now requires of every larger city; Madrid and Barcelona enforce theirs firmly, and foreign or rental vehicles may need registering online before entering. When in doubt, park outside the centre and ride in.

Overnight stops & wild camping

Spanish practice separates parking from camping: spending the night inside a legally parked van (pernocta) is broadly tolerated, but the moment chairs, awnings or levelling ramps come out it becomes camping — banned outside campsites in most regions and enforced along the coast in summer. A fast-growing network of áreas de autocaravanas fills the gap; coastal municipalities post their own rules, so read the signs.

When to go

July and August on the coasts are hot, crowded and best booked far ahead. Spring and autumn are the sweet spot almost everywhere. And southern Spain is the rare corner of Europe where a winter campervan trip needs no special planning — Andalusia and the southeast stay mild, which is exactly why vans book out over Christmas.

Pickup & one-way trips

Depots concentrate in Madrid, Barcelona, Málaga, Seville, Valencia and Bilbao, and one-way rentals between them are well supported by the fleet operators — a north-coast-to-Andalusia run is a classic. The islands are their own story: mainland one-ways don't cross the water, and Balearic or Canary rentals usually come from local operators.

Frequently asked questions

Can I sleep in my campervan on the beach in Spain?

Usually not. Many coastal municipalities explicitly ban overnighting in vehicles by the shore, especially in summer, and patrols do check. Look for an área de autocaravanas a few minutes inland instead — they're spreading quickly and often cost little or nothing.

Are Spanish motorways tolled for campervans?

Far less than they used to be: most former AP toll motorways are now free, and only a handful of stretches still charge. Where tolls apply, the class depends on the vehicle's height and axles, so a tall motorhome can pay more than a compact camper.

Is winter a good time to rent a campervan in Spain?

In the south, yes — it's one of Europe's few comfortable winter van destinations, and demand around Christmas reflects that. Check the van has a heater for inland nights, which get cold even in Andalusia, and book the winter-sun hotspots earlier than you'd expect.
