Renting a campervan in Frankreich: what to know

Driving & tolls

Autoroutes are excellent but tolled, and most campervans pay Class 2 — noticeably more than a car — so budget for the péage or take the free routes nationales, which are often the prettier choice anyway. Several cities (Paris, Lyon, Grenoble and more) run low-emission zones requiring a Crit'Air sticker; confirm the van carries one before heading into town.

Overnight stops & wild camping

The aire de camping-car is a French institution: municipal stopovers with parking, water and a service point, free or a few euros a night, in nearly every region. Wild camping is restricted — especially on the coast and in national parks — but the aires network is so dense you'll rarely miss it.

When to go

French school holidays make August the busiest, priciest month, especially on the Atlantic and Mediterranean coasts. June and September give you the same weather with half the traffic. From November to March, roads in mountain zones legally require winter tyres or chains on board (the Loi Montagne) — worth checking if you're headed to the Alps or Pyrenees.

Pickup & one-way trips

Fleet depots cluster around Paris, Lyon, Bordeaux, Toulouse and the south coast, and the fleet operators offer one-way rentals between selected French cities for a fee. Peer-to-peer vans return to their owners, so a loop through one region — a Brittany circuit, a Provence ring — is the natural shape of a private rental.

Frequently asked questions

How much are French motorway tolls for a campervan?

Most campervans fall into Class 2 (over two metres tall), which costs roughly half again as much as a car on the same stretch; large motorhomes over three metres pay Class 3. The free N and D roads are slower but scenic — many travellers mix the two.

What exactly is an aire de camping-car?

A designated motorhome stopover, usually run by the commune: somewhere legal to park overnight, often with drinking water, waste disposal and sometimes electricity, for free or a small fee. They're first-come, first-served, and there are thousands across France.

Do I need a Crit'Air sticker in France?

Inside the growing number of low-emission zones (ZFE) — including Paris, Lyon and Grenoble — vehicles must display a Crit'Air vignette. Rental vans based in France usually have one; if you're driving in from another country, sort the sticker before entering a zone, as fines apply.
